不死不活的中国英语教学

   病名:中国英语教学得了重病,病名叫“不死不活”,病到不死不活的程度。“不死”,指学生该死记的东西没死记;“不活”,指学生该活用的东西没活用。

    什么叫“死”的呢?小时候唱的儿歌,背的唐诗,我们都能死死记住。什么叫“活”的呢?从小到大说的话,甚至是昨天说的话,都是活的,你还记得吗?你都忘记了。你花了几百几千个小时学过的“活英语”却记不住多少东西。

    病症:学生从小学到大学毕业,学英语十几年,学得苦,两极分化严重,许多人厌学;硬起头皮学的人也只是应付中考和高考。总之,少、慢、差、费,害了几代人。

    病因:教材编得又长又厚,偏偏少了情趣,少了哲理,少了文学和音乐,没有几篇值得学生死死记住的东西。活的东西,练口语的东西倒不少,这也是新教材的特点和优点。但是,一个班40名学生甚至更多,一个人说两句,45分钟就没了。课堂上交流不了,活不起来,课后就更难交流,更难活用了。他们没有练英语的机会和环境,与何人交流?

    药方: 只把病名改动一个字,把“不死不活”改为“又死又活”。

    具体治病方案:先死后活。

    先死。让初中一年级的学生花一天时间(24课时),顶多两天,死记几十篇短的东西,短的容易记;有名的,有名的东西值得我们记;美的、有哲理的、有情趣的,美的、有哲理的、有情趣的的东西才能吸引我们去记;耳熟能详的,耳熟能详的才能记一辈子。死记几十篇儿歌、唐诗,外国名歌、名诗,还有短的故事。

以下几篇就值得背,也很容易背:

A Song

There are two tigers,

Who run fast.

One has no ears, the other one no tail.

How strange they are!

 

A Poem

Good, better, best,

Never let it rest,

Till good is better,

And better (is) best.

 

A Story: A Yes Man 一个只会说Yes的学生

Foreigner: Hi! You are a student, aren’t you?

Student: Yes.

F: Do you speak English?

S: Yes.

F: Are you a native of Beijing? 你是北京当地人吗?

S: Yes.

F: Do you know how to go to the Great Wall?

S: Yes.

F: Tell me how to go to the Great Wall, please.

S: Yes.

F: (several minutes later) Could you tell me, please!

S: Yes.

F: Which bus should I take, this one or that one?

S: Yes.

F: How far is it?

S: yes.

F: (murmurs to himself喃喃自语) How stupid I am to ask a person who doesn’t know English!

S: Yes.

F: (angry)You are stupid, too.

S: Yes.

F: (smiling) Oh, I see you are a yes man.

S: Yes!

 

    死记几十篇古今中外名歌、名诗和有哲理的故事就像养几十只“迷你母鸡”,就有了“亲兵亲将”,有一块“根据地”。几十篇东西包含了核心语法和近千个核心单词。有了几十篇东西,学生就有了独立学习的能力,就像是“会当凌绝顶,一览众山小!”

    养好“鸡”的标准是:开发右脑,使用全脑,做到能用几秒钟将一首短歌、短诗一口气背出来。能用几秒钟一口气背出来的东西你一辈子也不会忘记。从某种意义上说,学好英语只要几十口气。

    先把英语“房子”盖好。“房子”盖好后强调“粉刷”、“油漆”、“装修”。

    先整体,后局部。你到北京,转进一个胡同,再转到另一个胡同,转几个月几年也不知北京什么模样。如果一到北京就买张地图,先认天安门、东西长安街,再认二环、三环、四环和东西南北,用不了一个小时就了解了北京全貌。学英语也一样,作为初中学生,一开始就来个全面了解,让学生明白,学的东西就那么多,增加信心,并非学海无涯、前途茫茫。英语的全貌是:有26个字母,48个音标,有基本的单词2000多个,有语法规则十几个“四”。

    后活。学生就有了独立学习的能力后,活就比较容易。先能唱歌、背诗、讲故事,然后对话、辩论就比较容易。

    我赞成初中一年级学生就要活学英语。初中的课本不是拿来死背的,而是拿来活用的,拿来操练、辩论的。以How I learned to learn English这篇课文为例。

    原文:

    How I learned to learn English

    Last year my English class was difficult for me. First of all, it wasn’t easy for me to understand the teacher when she talked to the class. To begin with, she spoke too quickly, and I couldn’t understand every world. Later on, I realized that it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand every word. Also I was afraid to speak in class, because I thought my classmates might laugh at me. I couldn’t always make complete sentences, either. Then I started to watch English-language TV. It helped a lot. I think that doing lots of listening practices is one of the secrets of becoming a good language learner. Another thing that I found very difficult was English grammar. So I decided to take lots of grammar notes in every class. Then I started to write my own original sentences using the grammar I was learning. It’s amazing how much this helped. Now I am enjoying learning English and I got an A this term. My teacher is very impressed.

 

    先读一遍,认识单词和语法,理解课文。

    抓住要点,站在正方立场,用自己的话写一篇短文。

    抓住要点,站在反方立场,用自己的话写一篇短文。

    把两篇短文连起来,熟读,自己和自己辩论。然后与班上另一位同学辩论,先站在正方立场辩论,后站在反方立场辩论。

    改写后的文章可以是这样的:

    Negative: I hate English. It isn’t easy for me to understand the teacher when he speaks English. She speaks too quickly. I’m afraid to speak in class, because I think my classmates might laugh at me. And I find English grammar is very difficult. Do you agree with my opinion?

    Positive: I thought so last year. Later on, I realized that it doesn’t matter if you don’t understand every word. I started to watch English-language TV. I decided to take lots of grammar notes in every class. Then I started to write my own original sentences using the grammar I was learning. Now I am enjoying learning English.

 

    改写就是创新。由于学生动了脑筋,用自己的语言写,记得牢。改写几十篇课文后,英语水平必将大大提高,至少有了写作能力和书面的辩论能力,说不定他们还能写出一本自己的口语书。
